American fast food restaurant chain Chick-fil-A is notifying an undisclosed number of customers of a data breach after their accounts were hacked in a wave of recent credential stuffing attacks.
Self-described as the third-largest quick-service restaurant company in the United States, Chick-fil-A operates a network of more than 3,000 restaurants and provides catering services across the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.
The company revealed in data breach notification letters sent to affected individuals and filed with multiple Attorney General offices that it detected the attacks after identifying suspicious login activity to certain Chick-fil-A One accounts.
As Chick-fil-A discovered while investigating the incident, the attackers targeted Chick-fil-A’s website and mobile app in June.
“Following a careful investigation, we determined that unauthorized parties launched an automated attack against our website and mobile application between June 17 and June 19, 2026 using account credentials (e.g., email addresses and passwords) obtained from a third-party source,” it said. “Based on our investigation, we determined on July 13, 2026 that the unauthorized parties may have accessed information in your Chick-fil-A One account.”
The information exposed in the breach includes a combination of customers’ names, email addresses, Chick-fil-A One membership numbers and mobile pay numbers, QR codes, the amount of Chick-fil-A credit, and the last four digits of your credit/debit card number. Additionally, the attackers may have also gained access to birth dates, phone numbers, and addresses if stored in the compromised accounts.
While Chick-fil-A didn’t disclose how many customers had their accounts breached in the June credential stuffing attacks, the company told the Texas Attorney General that the resulting data breach impacts 2182 Texans. Chick-fil-A also sent data breach notification letters to residents of Iowa, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont, and Rhode Island.
In credential stuffing, attackers use automated tools to breach user accounts with stolen username/password pairs, a tactic especially effective when reusing credentials across multiple platforms. The end goal is to steal personal and financial information after taking over accounts, which can later be sold to other cybercriminals or used for identity theft and other malicious purposes.
In response to the incident, Chick-fil-A logged out all impacted accounts, removed payment methods, restored Chick-fil-A One account balances, and added rewards to affected accounts as a way of apologizing. Since the accounts were compromised using stolen credentials, the restaurant chain also advised impacted users to change their passwords as soon as possible.
A Chick-fil-A spokesperson was not immediately available for comment when contacted by BleepingComputer on Tuesday about how many customer accounts were breached in the attacks.
Chick-fil-A also confirmed in March 2023 that threat actors accessed the personal information and used the stored rewards balances of over 71,000 customers after hacking their accounts in a similar wave of credential stuffing attacks between December 2022 and February 2023.
